I got a call from a realtor who pulled a flyer from my front yard. I asked her if she had clients who were interested. She said not at the moment, but she just wanted to see what is out there to show potential clients. One of the questions she asked me was how much we owe on our mortgage. Why would she ask this? I can't figure it out. I am not a person with a used car and needing to get payoff on it. I don't get it. Should I have answered the question?

Hi Tina,

What you owe on your mortgage is none of her business. The agent is going on a fishing expedition to learn as much about your situation as possible so she can be in a better negotiating position with her buyer.

She figures if you NEED to sell quickly than she can make a low ball offer.

You did the right thing by not telling her anything.

I am an investor and I would assume that so is this realtor. He/She was probably trying to figure out what you owe to see if there were any creative options available to get your house sold. We use several programs all legal and fair. Now do beware there are people out there that will not treat you fairly. There is nothing to be worried about just giving out what you owe on your mortgage.
